Regulation Question

If one purpose of government is to protect society and one purpose of business is to raise profits...

How can we make the Republican's mental leap that deregulating business will protect the public.

Will businesses VOLUNTARILY give up profits to insure the public is safe???

The answer is obvious to me.

This year more toys are being recalled because they present a safety hazard to their young users.  Many of these are from big name manufacturers.  How, with all the attention paid to child safety in our society, did these companies let these products come to market?

And then there is Vioxx!

My point...

Would you feel better if we got rid of the FDA and "snake oil drugs" entered the market?  Would you like to eat any meat without the Dept. of Agriculture inspection programs?  Would you like to work where the Department of Labor doesn't help regulate health and safety issues.  What about child labor regulations?  With no regulation your job might be done better and more cheaply by a teenage computer junkie!

Have your telephone, cable, electric, natural gas bills gone down since each of those industries was deregulated?

I think most people don't want government intrusion and regulation until they think about all the public health, labor, and safety issues.

What do you think?
