
The Horse Chestnut
& World Conker Championships
Although not native to the British Isles, the Horse Chestnut must be the most easily recognisable tree of all the many species established there because of it's association with the game of conkers. Planted in many towns and parks for it's beautiful appearance, the Horse Chestnut Aesculus hippocastanum was introduced from Istanbul in 1576... the Turks feeding the nutty fruits to their ailing horses - hence the popular name...
