ANN COULTER IS SUFFERING FROM A CRITICAL CASE OF PARANOIA--IN MY HUMBLE OPINION

Ann Coulter recently appeared on the Today show with Matt Lauer. She has a new book out and obviously it is filled with the same right wing propaganda that has filled all of her other books. She never says anything new; it is nothing but a regurgitation of her warped and distorted few of the world. If we did not know better we would be certain she was dropped on her head as a child.

While in graduate school I took my clinical training at St. Elizabeth’s mental health center in Washington, D. C. My supervising psychiatrist was the personal psychiatrist for Senator Joseph McCarthy, the Republican Senator from Wisconsin who was on a witch hunt for all the Communists he fantasized were hiding behind every tree and shrub in the nation’s capital. In the process of his wild search, he destroyed the careers of hundreds of men and women who were loyal and dedicated laborers for the federal government, the movie industry, or the publishing houses. Because McCarthy was a U. S. Senator he got away with trampling on the civil rights of innocent citizens simply because he was suspicious of something they did, or said, or someone with whom he or she associated. He had nothing but circumstantial evidence and yet many had their careers ruined for decades because of the distrust he engendered.

In the case of people suffering from paranoia,  according to all of the research available, those who have volumes of unexpressed hostility to the authority figures in their lives, transfer the pent-up feelings to a safe target such as an institution such as the government, the Democratic Party, Liberals, Progressives, etc. that will not retaliate or strike back.

Ann Coulter is one of these people. She was convinced that prior to her appearance with Matt Lauer, she had been banned by NBC. A series of very important events forced the network to bump her from her scheduled appearance. Later, she was cancelled again for the appearance of a very news worthy person who could not be scheduled at any other time. While she accepted the first cancellation with only a small dose of paranoia, she could not casually accept two cancellations in the same week without airing her subconscious feeling that NBC had banned her from appearing on the Today Show because of her biased political conservatism and her manner of delivering her right wing opinions.

It apparently never dawned on her that, indeed, in a week full of important political and international events that there might be one or two such stories that would surpass the importance of promoting her new book.

The interesting thing to me is that the Conservatives line up one or more of their Conservative Foundations, or heavy hitters to buy enough books on publication day to make her hard back an immediate New York Times Best Seller. It is fixed in advance and guarantees her tons of free publicity and even more sales.

One day while shopping at a local Dominick’s I ran into a woman that I just adored. She has a heart filled with joy and she loves to come to the aid of people who are hurting. She asked me what I thought of Ann Coulter. I took a deep breath, counted to 10 and then told her that I found her to be a woman who made herself perversely controversial for the sole purpose of selling books.

My friend informed me that at choir practice the night before at the church we both attended at the time, Bill (a man we both knew and respected) came to choir practice with a copy of  Coulter’s most recent indictment of everything progressive, liberal, and, of course, everything reasonable and factual. Apparently Bill passed it around throughout the practice encouraging people to buy it and read it.

In reaction, I sent Bill and several other church members who appeared to

be interested in or sympathetic to Coulter’s vendetta against the Liberal side of the political coin, a copy of David Brock’s Blinded by the Right which is the story of a former Conservative who revealed the real story behind the egregious efforts on the part of the far right to get Bill Clinton and his progressive agenda out of the White House or to put it another way--impeached.

Funded and spearheaded by Richard Mellon Scaife, the billionaire heir to the Mellon Bank fortune estimated at the time to be $4 billion dollars and whose ideas of government and politics make Machiavelli look like a Socialist. This egomaniac had the overwhelming delusion that he could disregard the will of the people, invalidate the votes of the majority of the American people and through lies, threats and pay-offs could buy the Oval Office.

Through agents, Scaife paid the Arkansas troopers to lie about Clinton’s extra-marital sex life. He paid off Paula Jones who brought a sexual harassment suit against the president and bought the services of an old political hack who was big in Arkansas Republican politics and also very anxious to get Clinton removed from office.

Through the efforts of David Brock, a writer for the American Spectator, an ultra-conservative rag funded partially by Richard Mellon Scaife, that broke the story to the world about Bill Clinton and Paula Jones fueling the impeachment proceedings against the president as well as the long, drawn out efforts on the part of Ken Starr, the Special Prosecutor, to tar and feather Bill Clinton at the cost to the taxpayers of $70 million dollars.

NNDB puts it this way: “The January 1994 issue of The American Spectator included an article by Brock entitled "Living With the Clintons" which broke the “Troopergate” scandal. It reported that an Arkansas state trooper claimed that then-governor Bill Clinton had screwed some woman 1991 "whom the trooper remembered only as Paula." The article generated a firestorm that gave rise to the Paula Jones lawsuit, the Ken Starr investigation, and the subsequent Lewinsky scandal.

In his subsequent book, as Brock’s culpability in the Clinton incident drew the blood of guilt for writing his original article for The American Spectator, and as he became more and more cognizant that the whole episode was a lie he helped to propagate, he put into words the depths of his misery and revealed to the world the hoax that Richard Mellon Scaife attempted to play on the entire American political system. Blinded by the Right is a book that anyone who deeply cares about the truth should read. It certainly throws a brilliant light on one of the most vicious examples of partisanship that this country has ever witnessed

Why this lame attempt at a true coup of Bill Clinton was not prosecuted was simply a result of two facts: (1) the Republicans controlled the Congress and (2) the Democrats did not have the chutzpa to do what should have been done. On the other hand, since Clinton was not convicted I suspect that the years of impeachment the process and the $70 million spent by Ken Starr and the office of the Special Prosecutors to prosecute these lies, Washington and the country was happy to have the whole mess behind them.

Ann Coulter has written a new book that is nothing more than a regurgitation of her previously twisted and perverted views on politics, morality and religious values.

No person in possession of a rational mind, an objective perception of the facts, and an unbending and resolute search for truth can write a book filled with lies, misleading statement of facts and a totally spurious view of reality.

Ann Coulter is a disgrace to the Republican Party, the Conservative ideology and the national search for a genuine bi-partisan political environment that is so deeply needed in this time of crisis on both our economic and international fronts.
