Last year I wrote this letter to the folks at  the official Groundhog site of Punxsutawney Phil.  You know im, that muckity-muck groundhog up in Pennsylvania.  I got a nice response from the webmaster Alan Freed.  I learned that groundhogs are danged marmots of some type!

Dear Groundhog Experts,

I have been watchin' Phil and you guys for years.  And, I love ole Phil.

But I have a question.

If Phil sees his shadow up there in Pennsylvania, does it mean we are gonna have six more weeks of winter here in Kentucky?

The reason I ask is that if Phil woke up here this mornin' then he would not have seen his shadow.

And, that's not all!  The groundhogs I talked to today insist that they are right, and Phil is wrong!  They're like, "What shadow?  I didn't see no shadow!  Who made Phil the "king" of Groundhog Day?  Have we no eyes?  If you prick us, do we not squeal like groundhogs?  Why don't nobody come and talk to us about shadows and such?"

I think they might have a point! But don't come and talk to 'em anytime soon.  They're a little riled up!

Sincerely,

Rick

Well, we like to think that Phil's forecast is quite universal, but if you want to rely upon a local prognosticating marmot, that's up to you :)
