Quote for the Day, 12/10/2005

"Every time I see Hole-in-the-Wall again, it's like seeing it fresh for the first time.  And every time that happens, I keep asking myself the same question:  How could I be so damn stupid to keep coming back here?"

-Paul Newman (Butch Cassidy), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Freedom of Speech

I saw a headline that read "Howard Stern Says Goodbye to FCC".  Maybe it's just me, but I doubt those were his exact words.

Rudy, A Message To You

I haven't been writing yet about the 2008 elections, because they're still a long way away.  But I am growing bored of all the analyses asking if Rudy Giuliani can get the Republican nomination in 2008.  The answer is no.  I even think the former New York mayor knows this.  As long as he is a private citizen, it is in no one's interest to tear him down; certainly not Republican conservatives, who can use him to raise funds to get re-elected, and then oppose almost everything Giuliani supports.  The moment he runs for anything outside of New York state, though, they will be at him like rabid dogs.  He has not led a spotless life; three marriages testify to that.  If he should campaign in the South I certainly expect utterly unfair, racist, and anonymous, attacks on him, suggesting that since he is Italian-American, he is somehow linked to organized crime.

Also, on 9/10/2001, he was a laughing-stock in New York City, a despised and ridiculed lame-duck, who dropped out of the Senate race in 2000 against Ms. Clinton because he expected to lose, and did not run for re-election as mayor because he would have been crushed in the polls.  I certainly don't think his stature will diminish that significantly between now and 2008, although yet another divorce might do it.  But people call him America's Mayor.  I think it likely that if he runs in 2008, he will run as America's Ex-Mayor, if he is lucky.  If he runs and he is not so lucky, he will run as America's Ex-Husband.

Belated Quote for the Day, 12/9/2005

"Life's like a movie, write your own ending.

Keep believing, keep pretending.

We've done just what we set out to do

thanks to the lovers, the dreamers, and you."

-Kermit the Frog, The Muppet Movie
