Quote for the Day, 12/15/2005
"It's dishonest, really. We spend hours making ourselves look completely different, and then we go into some dark place where we really can't see each other anyway, and then we drink so we don't know if the other person is really interesting or just seems interesting 'cause they're pretending to be interested in the person that we're pretending to be."

The President Uses Bad Language
My mother held a small fundraiser for Coleen Rowley tonight. Ms. Rowley, the ex-FBI whistleblower who caught Zaccarias Moussaoui and is currently running for Congress, made a strong case that the President's use of language is endangering our national security. She argued that by calling it a "war" on terror, we conflate the war on terror with the war in Iraq, we pretend they are either related or even identical. Since our own President often seems to confuse the war in Iraq with the problem of transnational terror organizations, it should surprise no one that a growing number of Moslems are becoming terrorists because they think it's the same thing as trying to free Iraq from foreign occupation. I'll leave aside how in the days after 9/11, the President talked about a "crusade" against terrorism, making it seem like we were going to war against Islam (though the Arab street hasn't forgotten). But the President is always saying that if we withdraw from Iraq, the terrorists win. Is it any wonder that some Iraqi freedom fighters (which is what a growing portion of the Iraqi resistance are) have come to the conclusion that if they want the US to get out of Iraq, they need to become terrorists?
