Quote for the Day, 12/17/2005
"Archbishop: A Christian ecclesiastic of a rank superior to that attained by Christ."
-H. L. Mencken
Mencken, while a great journalist and essayist, was an atheist, and quite shrill when it comes to religion. But this is still pretty funny.

Petard, Meet Hoist
No one has to worry about the possibility that Rep. Tom DeLay is innocent; an innocent man would seek to vindicate himself by facing the charges in court. That's not what Rep. DeLay did. First, Rep. DeLay went judge-shopping; after he was indicted, he didn't like the judge that was handling his case, so he went out and got a new one. Then, when he had found a sympathetic judge, he managed to get the judge to dismiss one of the charges against him. The prosecutor is seeking to get the charge reinstated, which will probably happen; it is rare that a grand jury indictment is thrown out by a judge. However, Rep. DeLay wanted the charges to be separated, so that the trial might be over quickly and if he's lucky enough to win he can go back to being House Majority Leader. The judge didn't go along with doubling (or more) the expenses involved just so Rep. DeLay could have two trials. The irony here is that if DeLay hadn't tried to get the other charge tossed, his trial would have ended soon enough for him to bribe and blackmail his way back into power...if he isn't convicted. Who knew that pushing the limits of the law and obstructing justice and making outrageous charges against anyone who supports ethical behavior could ever have a downside? Certainly not Rep. Tom DeLay.
