Democrats: The Party of the Military
Thirty-five Democrats with military experience are running for US House in 2005...this is in addition, of course, to the numerous incumbent Democratic Congressmen who are veterans. The Republican claim to be the party of national security stands in stark contrast with this administration's myriad miscues on the subject (and their efforts to shred the Constitution in the name of...liberty), and the relative dearth of Republican veterans among their office-holders. One of those Democratic veterans is running against Rep. Paul Tancredo, perhaps the chief champion of immigrant-bashing. Campaigning on the strength of his disbelief in America as a beacon of liberty to the world and his hatred for hard-working Hispanics who have chosen to adopt the American dream is evidently a vote-getter in Rep. Tancredo's Congressional district, though perhaps not state-wide, as a Hispanic candidate whipped beer heir Pete Coors in Colorado's 2004 Senate race.
Many Democratic candidates first risked their lives in the military; Republican officeholders mostly don't, and then go on to say, "Take 'your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore', and shove them up your ass." It's an interesting contrast.

Belated Quote for the Day, 12/28/2005
Against the beautiful and the clever and the successful, one can wage a pitiless war, but not against the unattractive.
-Graham Greene, Heart of the Matter
You could call it the Nixon rule. And, really, I think exceptions can be made for those who don't realize they're unattractive. Obviously, you can still call it the Nixon rule.
