The Phantom of the Congress
The Washington Times has a piece on whether the morally and ethically illiterate Rep. Tom DeLay will return as House Majority Leader (support for him has declined...but the people who'll speak on the record against the vindictive, vengeful fellow aren't in Congress). In the entire article, amazingly, there is not a single mention of Jack Abramoff, and Rep. DeLay's known receipt of illegal gifts from the lobbyist, and the pall that a year-long federal investigation and probable indictment of Rep. DeLay might cast on Republicans in Congress if he's returned as majority leader. Also, many Republicans now think it urgent that new regulations be placed on campaign finance and on all matters lobbyist-related. It is Rep. DeLay's ability to extort money and other things from lobbyists that is the source of much of his power...a return of Rep. DeLay to the leadership would mean an end to ethics reform in Congress.
It's amazing how an article about Rep. DeLay and his possible return to leadership manages to ignore almost all the issues involved.
