A Slow Weekend
Not a lot to say today. I could talk about (Sc)Alito, but there will be substantive things to say on that matter tomorrow after his Senate hearings. I'm working on a one-page summary of my novel (about which more later) and this has been a very, very slow week for politics. Despite the high relief a multitude of scandals in recent months have cast on Washington politics, campaign finance, and lobbying, any moves towards reform continue to move with all the speed of molasses.
But with Rep. Tom DeLay forswearing any effort to resume office as House Majority Leader, the possibility of reform remains possible. Over the weekend, I may have finally heard the stunning reason lobbying reform has been so slow even as the need is so dire: A reporter on one of the talking head shows said many Congressmen had told him if they take away the lobbyist perks, they'll leave Congress. It seems that $150,000 and control over the future of the free world pales in comparison to the chance to play a few free rounds of golf at St. Andrews.
I'll leave you on that cheery note.
