Going Too Far

Judge Alito was asked if he was a closet bigot by one of the Republican Senators, Lindsay Graham, and CBS News went on to say, "The question is if the Democrats went a step too far today."  This attack by a Republican led to Judge Alito's wife leaving the room crying.  Democrats are not accusing him of being racist, or sexist, or hostile to minorities.  The only person to do so was a Republican Senator.  Democrats just question whether he believes in any legal protections from discrimination.  His record justifies such questions.  Indeed, it justifies a reasonable belief that he thinks that there are no such protections:  A belief more reasonable than his claim that it was reasonable to strip-search a nine-year-old girl because she might be Al Capone.  No word on whether the nine-year-old--whose rights he was contemptuous of as a judge--cried.
