Althaea Interruptus
or, "How To Bring A Blog Back To Life"
To My Salon Friends:
I know for a fact that many of the people who read my blog also used to read Althaea Officinalis: Mallow Drama, a Salon Blog by Melanie Teegarden. Althaea/Melanie was one of those bloggers that seemed to inspire utter devotion in even first-time stoppers-by. Her prose was elegant, her passion was obvious, her honesty was refreshing, and her words were incredibly raw or eye-flutteringly beautiful...sometimes both. If you can successfully combine all that, well, you'll have an instant ardent readership on your hands. When I began on Salon last year, Melanie was one of the first people to greet me and make me feel a part of the community, and the first person to link to me on her sidebar. Combine all this, and yep...I'm a fan. Not just of the blog....of Mel.
Which is why I was so sad when, upon my return to Salon, it seemed like AO:MD was shut down. There hadn't been a new post since January 17, 2005. Melanie's busy -- no doubt about it -- but she didn't usually take breaks quite that long. So I decided to email her, and tell her that her words were missed. That's when I found out that the break was by no means self-imposed.
A bum computer was the culprit, and posts wouldn't issue from her new laptop at all, no matter what she did, as I understood it. This, to me, seems like something someone out there knows how to fix. So, with her permission, because the girl does not have the time to wade through lines and lines of Radio Support Forums (nor do I), I decided to host a small Save AO Forum in the comments of this post. Melanie needs to reinstall Radio on the new laptop, but somehow pick her blog up where it left off, without damaging chronology and past posts. I think this is possible by adjusting upstreaming, but I'm not totally sure how to make it all happen.
I'm willing to bet someone out there knows better! So speak up! Save AO! Bring it back so I can read some of the best writing on Salon Blogs again.
If you have an uberlengthy bit of advice on how to fix things, email me at save.ao@gmail.com, and I will send it on to Melanie. That way, I can wade through duplicate advice, etc. I might be busy, but I am not as busy as she is.
So, get to it, kids! Save AO! And if you're feeling indulgent or simply curious, why not stop by and check out some excellent wares.
Your faithful community nag,
Meg
