Meme'd Again.
See? I don't kill them! I take them in my stride! This movie meme comes to me from Patia,
who, in addition to having a riotiously cool name, would appear to be a
riotously cool person, and a fabulous writer and photog to boot. She's
going to laugh at my answers, though, and wish she'd sent this to
someone with more interesting film experiences. I'm a lover of good
movies and the foreign cinema (she said, while adjusting her beret and
sipping on her espresso...), but as my roommates will tell you with
some degree of consternation, I rarely ever watch movies or DVDs at
home. I simply cannot sit still that long very often in my own
apartment, unless I am completely and utterly engaged by what I am
watching (not to sound snobby or jaded, but that's hard to
accomplish...), or there are commercials to allow me to fidget (get
drinks, paint my toenails, phone people for two minutes, check my
email, make headway on random projects...). That being said, here we go:
Total Number of Films Owned:
One. Just the one. And I've watched it twice. I bought it because a boy
wanted to watch it, but it was rented already at the store. We just
ended up nabbing a used copy for $5.99. I don't even want to tell you
what it is, or that I watched it a second time while trying to cure a
bad bout of insomnia (it worked).
Okay, okay...Pulp Fiction. The most overhyped film ever, besides the prequels and sequels of George Lucas and Jim Cameron's entire oeuvre.
Last Film Bought: See above. Sigh.
Last Film Watched: Well, actually, I blogged about it. The Butterfly Effect, with
the greatest actor of my generation, Ashton Kutcher (don't choke, I'm
kidding). It wasn't as bad as you think. Actually, it was quite
thought-provoking, and fairly sad in a "what the hell...can their lives
get any more awful" kind of way. Before that, it was Bella Martha, which had hackneyed moments, but was charming overall, especially for a foodie like me.
Five Favorite Films That I Watch Frequently or That Mean A Lot To Me: I don't watch many films regularly. When I was 8 or so, our pay-tv channel showed Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back a kajillion times a day, so I would generally end up watching some portion of it at some point in the week. I think I saw Empire a
good 25 or 30 times. Eeeek. I'd always rather watch movies in the
theatre (which I love), so that cuts down on how often I see things
again (Dammit, Jim, I'm a writer, not a millionaire!).
I continue to love the following flicks: Strictly Ballroom. Yes,
mock all you like. I know it's a Baz Luhrmann colour-fest, and
distinctly cheesy and over the top, but it's also ridiculously fun in
an idiotic, absurdist sort of way. And it has one of the great lines in
modern cinema:
"Pam Short's broken both her legs, and I wanna dance with you."
I also enjoyed Before Sunset, simply
because I tend to be just as rambly and esoteric as the dialogue in
that movie. I think it was a love letter to people who talk too much,
much more so than the film it followed, Before Sunrise. I hate to trumpet anything starring Ethan Hawke, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Roman Holiday makes
me want to have a whirlwind romance with Gregory Peck, and while Audrey
Hepburn was a bit silly throughout, her indomitable spirit,
philanthropic legacy, and fabulous sense of style prevent me from
saying a single negative thing about her. She made me happy to be a
clothes-loving brunette far more than the more haunted and tragic
Jackie O. ever possibly could.
Amelie was simply lovely. There is no other word for it. I could watch that movie endlessly.
And last but not least, Say Anything. John Cusack owns my heart for that film. Undeniably.
And among my favourites otherwise: The
Insider, Traffic, In the Bedroom, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House,
Slapshot, A Christmas Story, Chocolat, Friday Night Lights, One Flew
Over The Cuckoo's Nest, My Left Foot, Adaptation, Best in Show,
Monster's Ball, Bridget Jones' Diary (I know, I know.).
Miraculously, I want to see, and have not seen: Sideways,
Ray, In America, Requiem for a Dream, Five Easy Pieces, A Clockwork
Orange, Deliverance, Annie Hall, The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, and The Verdict.
Movie you would most like to see again if you could find it: Dr. Strangelove. It's never at my local stores.
There -- look! -- I meme'd like a good girl. And now, with a spirit of revenge, I turn this on: Dick (because I'm betting he would reccommend a few great flicks); and Chuck, for the same reason (though I am betting he'll ignore me); and Mike (because he did it to me!) .
Wahoo!
