this weekend at the 'cabin.

Well, folks, it's a full one, start to finish.

We're calling it the Sports-Kend (a contraction of 'sports weekend') around here, because it's all about sports, all the time, for the next 48 hours.

Tonight, the Vancouver Canucks handily defeated the Calgary Flames 3-1 in the latest game of what seems like an eternal road trip for my beloved home team. It was a hard-fought victory, but kudos to the boys for winning this latest episode in the finest rivalry in the Western Conference.

Tomorrow night, they take on the Edmonton Oilers, which happens to be the team I like least in the NHL (yes, Dad, even less than the Rangers.) I'm hoping we win that game, too -- and once again, I'll be there to lend my eternal and undying support to our home team.

And then Sunday? Oh, dear.

It's the Super Bowl, starring the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks -- a team I have enjoyed since I was but an embryo in my mother's womb, listening to the muffled sounds of my father cheering on the sofa. (I could really hear it, I'm sure. The man is LOUD.)

(UPDATE: Mr. Sigars has graciously pointed out to me that the Seahawks didn't exist until 1976. And since I was born in '74, the previous statement is an impossibility. Which proves one of two things: there ARE things in life I don't know about sports -- fairly important things, apparently -- or two, that I was potentially an embryo for the first two or three years of my life. I think it's the former, but the latter should make my mother shiver in horror for a little bit. And that's fun.)

I'm THRILLED to see them get this far, and I will be there, ready to leap into the air with every TD we score. I'll try not to knock over the bowls of chips and guac.

But most important of all, I am on BABYWATCH 2006 this weekend, waiting to receive news of Nancy -- if she gets her wish -- giving birth to a bouncing, beautiful Alienette. If you haven't been following the marvelous story of Nancy's pregnancy, well -- YOU'RE TOO LATE. IT'S ALMOST OVER.

Apparently, I will be joyfully serving as BABY BROADCAST CENTRAL, which means Norman (Nancy's lovely hubby) will be notifying me of any pertinent details as things develop, in the event of labour and all that good stuff.

Which is what we're hoping for.

Just so we're all clear on that.

What a weekend! Such tension! Such drama! Such sport! Such suspense!

If you know me well, you know that weekends like this bring out my inner hooligan, which means, at some point, I will end up on the couch with the BIGGEST COFFEE KNOWN TO MAN, wearing a baseball cap, sweatpants, and a big, ratty fleece, screaming like a banshee at the television while much more important things go on pretty much everywhere else in the world.

I figure that's okay one weekend a year, since most of the time, I'm pretty occupied by all those other things. And would be again, at a moment's notice, if something more important came up.

Like, say... A BABY.

But for now: hockey, hockey, football.

(The baby trumps everything else OF COURSE, but we're not sure it's going to happen yet.)

Stay tuned for sports updates all weekend long, not to mention guacamole and salsa recipes, thoughts on organized sports, thoughts on rain, thoughts on life, and assorted other meanderings from the mind of Meg: sports fan, devoted blogger, joyful friend, and babywatcher.

GO NANCE GO! GO CANUCKS GO! GO SEAHAWKS GO!

Good heavens! It's all so excellent.

And I just realized I missed out on a golden opportunity to start a baby pool. Is it too late?
