MOVEMENT

I find that I’m easily mesmerized these days, mostly by forms of movement, how objects move, how people move.  I was sitting in a café in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden staring out the window waiting for a friend to come back to the table.  Outside the window was a sculpture of a pole with four cubes branched off of it (“Cluster of Four Cubes” by George Rickey, 1992) .  I was thinking how odd this looked when the lowest cube appeared to start turning, very slowly.  I was thinking that that’s a pretty cool illusion of movement and I was trying to convince my self that nothing was really happening.  Immediately the bottom cube sped up and then all four cubes were spinning, some quite fast.  I was fascinated by this and didn’t notice my friend’s return.  I am not incredibly observant.  We sat and chatted but every so often I’d drift off watching this spectacle of movement and she would wave her hand in front of me to get me to return to earth.  She thought it was curious but funny.  I’d like to take people to the East Wing of the National Gallery but I’m afraid that I’d sit and stare at the Calder mobile in the foyer for an hour.  There’s a mobile room at the Hirshorn Museum of Modern Art that I would be paralyzed in.

I love watching my dog run.  When he’s allowed he is pedal to the metal fast.  He’s 60 pounds of muscle just itching to turn it on.  I live in a more urban area and there are so few places we can go where he can cut loose so when we get to an open place he shows me what speed is all about.  He’s a fluid runner and it’s a thing of beauty to watch.  We need bigger and better dog parks here.

I have mobiles hanging around my house and now you know why.  It’s amazing I get anything done around here with all this to watch.  Simple movement is amazing.  Everything moving but me.
