HAPPY FESTIVUS!
AND NOW........................
THE AIRING OF THE GRIEVENCES.
To Congress, during the past year you have disappointed me in the following ways....
None of you have managed to grow any cojones (except possibly republican Senators Sununu (NH), Murkowski (AK), Hagel (NE), and Craig (ID) for voting not to extend the current version of the "Patriot" Act). None of you have stood up for what is right for America and against what is wrong for America. Remember, your constituents are the taxpayers of this country, not the big corporations and lobbyists that give you huge gobs of money to do their bidding. If it is good for Americans, vote for it. If it is bad for Americans, vote against it. Forget about party lines. Do the right thing and who the hell cares which party gets credit for it.
Since you all seem to be a bit addled, probably because you've been in office way too long, let me give you a few hints. Keeping jobs in America = good thing. Health care for all Americans = good thing. Scientific research to help cure diseases, protect our environment, improve the quality of life for all Americans = good thing.
Drilling for oil in ANWAR = bad thing (get knotted Ted Stevens). Spending hundreds of billions of dollars in the Iraq war which is turning into another Vietnam = very bad thing. Keeping criminals like Tom Delay around = very bad thing. Running for office for the umpteenth time (Ted Kennedy) = bad thing. Allowing for the unsanctioned spying on American citizens = very, very bad thing (and unconstitutional).
Now lets get to the whole Constitution issue. There is a separation of church and state. That means no one religion has precedence over any other. Just because you believe in something doesn't mean I do so don't try and pass laws that circumvent that separation. Intelligent design is a theology subject, it is not science and does not belong in the science classroom. Just because your religion says abortion is wrong does not make it wrong for everyone else. If you don't like it then don't have one. I'm an athiest but I don't believe that you shouldn't celebrate christmas or easter or any other of your religious holidays. Live and let live. And speaking of that, let people die with dignity when they are done fighting against the illness that is killing them. The question is always how does this hurt you personally if it happens and the answer is not at all. Think about it, the government's role is not to intrude on people's personal lives.
In fact maybe everyone in congress should take a refresher course on the Constitution because you all have apparently forgotten everything it says. It is the single most important document in our country, it defines who we are. You accept all of it or none of it. You don't get to pick and choose what you like and don't like about it. The Constitution is America and many Americans have given their lives defending it. Try to remember that when you are looking for loopholes to get around the things you don't like.
Serving in congress is not a birthright. Just because you dad or husband or uncle was a president does not give you carte blanche to be in congress. You should have to earn it.
Some words of wisdom for you (these people were smarter than you so you should pay attention).
"The man who trades freedom for security does not deserve nor will he ever receive either. " - Benjamin Franklin
"Dissent is the highest form of patriotism" - Thomas Jefferson
I will humbly add:
"Being a sheep and following blindly is not patriotic. Hold your leaders accountable for their actions." - Chew Toys
One last thing, what's the big deal about gay marriages? Who does it hurt? Is your marriage weakened if gay marriage is allowed? I would say then that your marriage wasn't that strong to begin with and perhaps you should look into that. If two people care about each other you should be happy that they are together. We have big issues in this country to deal with and this should be a non-issue. It is time to start looking at what is really important in this world and deal with it and not waste time on issues that shouldn't even be issues. Yes you have really dissapointed me this year.
