Booooring!

I was watching MASH the other night and the crew was talking about Colonel Potter and how nice a guy he was. Father Mulcahey said, "Yes, he’s a very good Christian." Then, he smirked and said, "And, surprisingly, not dull at all."

I know it was MASH, but I thought that was a pretty telling comment. Why is it that it has to be pointed out that a certain Christian isn’t dull? We are called to be winsome and loving, not to suck the life out of life and be syrupy sweet. Yet that’s exactly how a lot of us are at times.

I think the attitude that we exhibit comes from a misunderstanding of who Jesus is and how the Bible instructs us to be. We think of Jesus as that guy in those third-rate movies. You know, those movies where Jesus is an English guy who shows absolutely no emotion and never even thinks about smiling. We’ve adopted that image as the one we are to be most like. And that simply isn’t a correct—or even healthy—image.

Jesus was far from emotionless. I think that Jesus was the kind of person that you wanted at your party. He was the guy you thought of when you had a problem. He was the one you never had to question whether he accepted you or not. He was the light of everyone’s life he came in contact with. He didn’t walk on glass to try and not hurt people’s feelings about foolish things—He lived deeply. And yet, he cared more about people than anyone who’s ever lived.

There was a balance to Jesus that was amazing; one that we should learn to emulate by spending time with Him. Jesus, in short, was anything but dull—and we shouldn’t be either!
