Your Best

I was talking to a guy recently who had two, really cool earrings.  We were talking about where he went to church, and I asked him if he wore the earrings to church.  He frowned without knowing it and admitted that he didn’t.  Besides, he said, aren’t we supposed to bring our best to God?

I sat there for a while, thinking about that, and something very profound came to me.  (This is rare, so pay attention...)  I said, “Dude, what if bringing your best before God simply means being the person that you are, completely.”  Why does it have to be a suit, or a dress?  That’s a cultural thing.  (By the way, who came up with ties?!  A piece of cloth strung around your neck!  I don’t get it.)  Why isn’t it just you being the best you that you were designed to be?

I know there are a lot of “buts” going on right now, but really think about this: how is dishonesty to your personality—which was specifically made to reveal something specific of God—honoring to God?  How is hiding the thing about you that makes you you, just because you’re afraid someone might shake their heads in disapproval, giving your best to God?  How is a foot conforming to the identity of a thumb edifying to the body of Christ?

So, be you, in all your glory.  Suit or sandals, ties or tattoos, be you.  The body of Christ is a colorful, beautiful creation with many splendidly different parts.  When we suppress those differences, the body suffers.

You just do harm when you tell a hand to be a foot.  So, don’t.
