ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - Democratic Gov. Bill Richardson has a wide lead over his Republican challenger in his bid for re-election, according to a new poll.
The survey of 664 registered voters statewide who said they were likely to vote found 60 percent of them would cast ballots for Richardson in the Nov. 7 general election.
"Once you get to 60 percent, that's really impressive," said F. Chris Garcia, political science professor emeritus at the University of New Mexico.
The GOP candidate, John Dendahl, was supported by 28 percent, and 12 percent said they did not know who they would vote for or are undecided.
The poll was commissioned by the Albuquerque Journal, which reported the results in a copyright story Monday.
The telephone survey, conducted Sept. 25-28 by Research & Polling Inc. of Albuquerque, has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
Richardson leads in every region of the state, among men and women, among Anglo and Hispanic voters, among all age groups and in every income level, the poll found.
Dendahl, a former state GOP chairman from Santa Fe, garnered support from 51 percent of the Republicans surveyed, while 35 percent favored Richardson, the poll found.
A Journal poll of 674 registered voters statewide, conducted Aug. 25-31, found 57 percent supported Richardson and 28 percent backed Dendahl. |
