If you dine out with any frequency, you know the importance
of a first-rate waitperson in assuring your dining pleasure. And you know that, in exchange for his/her
attentive ministrations, you should not only leave a generous tip, you should
also conduct yourself courteously. You
can, of course, choose to do neither, but, if you do, be prepared: you may well
find yourself dissed as a nutcase on one of the growing number of waiter-authored
weblogs like Waiter Rant.
Jessica Berthold’s brief interview, published in today’s
Dining Section of the Chicago Tribune, of the waiter behind Waiter Rant is an
eye-opener (at least it was for me). “Eighty percent of the customers are nice,
normal people, and the other 20 percent are psychotic”, the waiter claims. And this may not be mere hyperbole: the guy apparently used
to work in the mental health field, so it’s a good bet that he probably knows a
nutcase when he sees one.
Common sense suggests that people prone to psychotic conditions
should probably avoid restaurants, particularly busy metropolitan restaurants, because
these venues can only exacerbate their already mentally-friable state. Apparently, in 20 percent of the people,
common sense ain’t so common, but that's probably because they're nutcases.
